back to first year of the obama administration, from an unknown source, if you will, in an early meeting that the president had with jewish leaders, at the white house back in 2009, that the president wanted to spwant ed to put some daylight between the u.s. and israel. he didn't mention israel was thrown under the bus, but he didn't back off at all in his insistence that the u.s./israeli relationship, specifically relationship between the president and the prime minister, was under strain. i will point out this, he's right on that, the relationship between netanyahu and president obama is under strain. but the u.s./israeli military to military relationship, intelligence to intelligence relationship, at least according to ehud barak and shimon peres, i interviewed both of them in july, they insist the relationship has never been better. the personal relationship between these two leaders, though, is not good. >> that is what romney has pointed out. up until now, and perhaps largely because of the operation that killed osama bin laden, it has been advantage obama when it comes to

reaction from the obama administration to the uprising, if you will, in iran, a couple of years ago, when there were protests. people were angry and the u.s. was on the sidelines, the president did not directly speak out and the explanation that the administration at the time gave was that the opposition didn't want this to appear to be the opposition to the ayatollahs, standing up in iran, with the backing of united states. that could have been counterproductive. as a result, the obama administration was pretty silent. at the time now where romney is going after him on that, i think there were a few areas where there were some significant differences, but on the whole, after you get through some of the angry rhetoric, there is a lot of agreement between obama and romney, one area of disagreement on arming the syrian rebels. another area of disagreement, how far will iran be able to go in its nuclear weapons capability, the capability of developing a bomb as opposed to actually having a bomb. and the third was on russia. he twice in a speech singled out vladimir putin as a basically a foe
meant to say the last 10 years, and it came out wrong. this is fodder for the obama campaign. it will not change, i do not think, in a huge way, the course of events, but there is no question the obama campaign folks, every time biden is out there, they are nervous about what he is going to say, how it comes out. they would prefer to have barack obama cleaning up barack obama this week, rather than joe biden cleaning up barack obama. >> what do you think? the vice presidential debate is coming up. >> it just so happens joe biden and paul ryan respect each other and get along well. those two were the ones that had all the protestants. i think this will be a fun debate, and enjoyable debate. joe biden has a good sense of humor. you are not going to see him paint barack obama in his debate. >> i hope it is more interesting. yes, there were 50 million people calling the first debate, and the question i have is, for how long? i was sitting there thinking, ok, obama did not show up to play, and this is unbelievably boring. if i did not have to do this for a living, i would turn on

was the barack obama i've been listening to now for four years. he sounded very much like himself. i don't think he was terribly bad. i think he has a very weak case. i think that the circumstances in the country present the challenging candidate with all kinds of opportunities. mitt romney was on his game and he took advantage of those opportunities. the president is saddled with weak circumstances and therefore a weak case. it is not surprising to me didn't argue it very well. the other thing is, despite his reputation as being this world class orator, maybe he is with a set piece speech but there is not a lot of evidence in the past he was a great debater. we put those thing together, i don't think this was a big a shock as president's supporters on the left feel. he is not 10 feet tall and has never been. bill: candidates square off october 16th week and a half from now, long island, new york, at hofstra university. patti ann: the political winds may be shifting. governor romney enjoying quite a post-debate bounce. going past president obama in the rasmussen tracking poll. 49-to obama's 47.
as to avoid being trapped by it. but the other point to make is that president obama has had several years. during those years the options that he took or the choices that he took narrowed the options that he has today so one of the reasons why governor romney's approach to iran looked similar in some respects to president obama's is because governor romney would have done things very differently two or three years ago. governor romney maids a critique in june of 2009. that's when to begin. >> woodruff: let me ask you very quickly, would governor romney, for example, be more willing to let israel go ahead and attack iran if it come to that? >> governor romney has made it clear can't dictate to israel how israel protects itself from what it considers to be an existential threat. governor romney hassles said that he would be israel's strongest supporter in the region. he's worried about president obama's decision to create daylight between the united states and israel. >> woodruff: let me turn then to michelle flournoy. how do you respond for the campaign? >> the iran case is a great example
